Description

The Child Protection Act requires a review process every five years to ensure that it remains responsive to the needs of children. This review process includes extensive engagement of the public and other stakeholders, including distinct consultations with First Nations. In addition to other needs, this review process highlighted the need for: 1) a social policy framework within PEI to promote and support healthy child and family development and well-being that is inclusive of Indigenous children and families and aimed at the collective responsibility of government, families, and communities in this process; 2) collaborative approaches to integrated programming, done in partnership with families and communities; 3) a social determinants of health approach to the development of this social policy framework; and 4) improved delivery of child protection services through enhanced cultural sensitivity and cultural competency.
