Affirming the Province of BC’s commitment to working in partnership with Indigenous Peoples to make progress on reconciliation, in the Fall of 2019, the provincial government became the first province in Canada to pass legislation to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. The Act is intended to provide a path forward on reconciliation based on respect for Indigenous Peoples’ human rights. The Act stipulates that individuals have the right to cultural safety, the highest levels of health and wellness, and access to traditional medicines and healing approaches.
