Entry-level Competency Profile for the Social Work Profession in Canada

2017

Canadian Council of Social Work Regulators

Description

As a step towards developing standard competencies for social workers across Canada, this report reviews over 60 standards of practice, codes of ethics and other relevant documents to compile a draft list of competencies for social work practice, including a core set of values and principles that underlie social work practice such as dignity of clients, cultural sensitivity, pursuit of social justice, integrity and ethical conduct. Panel respondents also identified several areas that could be expanded in the competency profile, including topics of power, oppression, discrimination and conflict; self-care and reflection; client engagement; social justice and advocacy; community practice; social policy change; understanding various contexts of practice; and cultural diversity.
