This study aimed to assess the risk of arsenic exposure from the former Giant Mine and associated risk factors for residents of Yellowknife and the local Dene and Métis peoples. The study found that children in the study had significantly higher urinary inorganic-related arsenic concentrations than children in the general population, and that these concentration levels were above the Biomonitoring Equivalent levels that are associated with dermal effects, vascular problems, and cancer rinks. Key risk factors for arsenic exposure were drinking lake water - for children, and consuming local mushrooms and berries - for adults.
