The authors examine the perceptions and coping strategies of the Aamjiwnaang First Nation, who live within the area known as "Chemical Valley" that consists of a large complex of petrochemical plants. The study revealed a strong level of community cohesion and connection to 'place' that prevented residents from leaving despite the high risk of negative health outcomes. It also highlighted strategies for mitigating potential harms and coping emotionally with health threats.
