2015

Johnson-Jennings, M., Tarraf, W., & González, H.M.

International Journal of Indigenous Health

Description

The authors use a relationship-centered medical decision-making framework to examine the influence of Indigenous racial concordance and patient ethnic salience on how healthcare providers assessed pain. They found that healthcare providers' perceptions of racial/cultural attributes is a potential source of assessment bias among Indigenous patients, suggesting the need to identify specific interventions that improve cultural awareness and sensitivity for Indigenous patients suffering from pain.
