UN/DESA Policy Brief #70: The impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous Peoples

2020

United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs

Description

This fact sheet discusses the potentially disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Indigenous populations due to higher rates of health issues, widespread stigma and discrimination in healthcare systems, limited access to medical and financial supports in times of crisis, and lower socio-economic status. It also highlights the particular threat of the COVID-19 virus on Indigenous elders and women, how Indigenous peoples have responded to the pandemic, and recommendations for government and non-governmental organizations to mitigate potential adverse impacts on these populations within a human rights framework.
