Description

This study aims to establish whether blood mercury levels are related to the decrease in paraoxonase 1 (PON1) activities in Nunavik Inuit who have been highly exposed to mercury through their seafood-based diet. PON1 is an enzyme that could protect against cardiovascular disease. The results indicate that exposure to mercury inhibits the activity of PON1, which is also compensated by a selenium intake.
