Integrating Indigenous Ways of Knowing into medical education

Dr. Patricia Farrugia is an Anishinaabe Orthopaedic Surgeon from the Saugeen-Ojibway Nation in Ontario, dedicated to advancing both healthcare and Indigenous representation in medicine. She is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery and serves as the Associate Dean of Indigenous Health in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University. In addition, Dr. Farrugia holds a leadership role as the Chair of Indigenous Health at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, where she is passionate about integrating Indigenous Ways of Knowing into medical education, fostering cultural humility, and ensuring that all students have access to learning opportunities related to Indigenous health and perspectives.

Dr. Farrugia's educational journey includes an Orthopedic Residency at McMaster University, followed by specialized fellowships in Foot and Ankle and Trauma at the University of Toronto and McMaster University. She practices in Hamilton in the Orthopedic and Spine divisions at Hamilton Health Sciences, where she advocates for continued improvement in healthcare delivery and access for Indigenous communities.
