Championing best practices in community nursing and Indigenous population and public health

April MacNaughton is of Ktunaxa Nation ancestry, from the Kootenay region of British Columbia. She is passionate about Indigenous health and in her nursing practice, provides expert advice on population and public health best practices. April has a long tenure of leadership and clinical expertise within Communicable Disease, Public Health and Community Health Nursing and has held public health nursing leadership roles provincially and nationally.

Over the past 21 years of her nursing career, she has worked in community as a Community Health Nurse; on the BC First Nations and Inuit Health Branch Region Health Protection Team; as Director of Communicable Disease Population and Public Health for the BC First Nations Health Authority; and for Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) National Capital Region. Currently, as the Acting Director of Public Health Operations at ISC, April provides national strategic, operational leadership and direction with regards to the integration, implementation, and sustainment of evidence-informed quality public and population health practices within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Public Health, Director General’s Office of Population and Public Health.

Throughout her career, April has been involved in the oversight and monitoring of compliance with legislation and professional standards of practice; including facilitating and supporting the implementation of best practice models of care delivery. April’s work is grounded in the goals of supporting and empowering Indigenous Peoples to independently deliver services, address socio-economic conditions in their communities, improve health and wellness, and ultimately support the delivery of quality Indigenous health programming with best practice, clinical expertise, respect for knowledge, cultural teachings and practice, and with care. She holds a Master of Science in Nursing Degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and is an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Nursing. April has been honoured with awards for her scholarship and dedication to nursing.
