Aboriginal peoples began forming their own child welfare agencies in the 1970s, and the movement towards self-determination continues. However, numerous challenges remain. This fact sheet provides an overview of the various child welfare models serving Aboriginal children and the ways in which Aboriginal peoples have been able to gain some control over child welfare law and policy.
