Parenting in the Present: A resource for First Nations, Inuit and Metis parents and caregivers of children aged 6-12 years

November 2021

Parenting in the Present: A resource for First Nations, Inuit and Metis parents and caregivers of children aged 6-12 years was developed through a partnership between the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH) and the Manitoba Department of Families, Child and Youth Services Division (CYSD). The booklet shares stories, cultural practices, guidelines, and knowledge about parenting and caring for First Nations, Inuit and Metis children age 6-12 years.

The resource is intended to support effective parenting skills to enhance the healthy growth and development of children in the middle years, including their self-esteem, school achievement, brain development, and health behaviours. Information provided in the booklet is grounded in strengthening the relationship between parents and their children, as well as maintaining children’s strong connections to extended family and community. How children learn, what routines and responsibilities are expected of them, what to consider for a balanced diet, how to ensure physical health and safety, considerations for technology and online safety, and what to expect during puberty are some of the topics included in the resource.
