Indigenous knowledges and pandemic science: Graphic recording

December 2025

The NCCIH organized and hosted a virtual, open-forum conversation on Indigenous science and well-being in the context of pandemic preparedness and response on March 21, 2025. The NCCIH invited 15 First Nations, Inuit, and Métis knowledge holders and health experts from across Canada to share their expertise, experiences, and stories around Indigenous pandemic realities. Several key themes emerged from the conversation, including decolonizing data and addressing the determinants of health and systemic inequities. More key themes can be seen in the graphic recording of this conversation by Métis illustrator, Joanne Gervais. Representatives from PHAC’s Office of the Chief Science Officer were invited to attend in a listening capacity to inform their thinking in the development of Canada’s Pandemic Preparedness Plan (CPPP). A series of podcasts with Indigenous scholars from the meeting are also in the works.
