Indigenous-led climate action: Links between carbon capture and storage and health

December 2025

This fact sheet is one in a series of two that showcase the links between climate action and public health. Together, the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health and Whitefish Lake First Nation #128 (WFL #128) in Treaty Six territory explore the connections between WFL #128’s climate action projects and protecting and promoting the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples and communities. In this fact sheet, we focus on WFL #128’s plans for a baseline assessment to forecast potential effects on environmental and human health from a large-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project proposed to take place within the WFL #128 territory. Connections are drawn between CCS and health, such as risks from ground water contamination or air pollution. The fact sheet concludes with insights from related research to address the effects of CCS projects, including considerations for consultation, engagement, and building community partnerships, and strategies to protect groundwater quality.
