This document summarizes the report Overcoming barriers to culturally safe and appropriate dementia care services and supports for Indigenous peoples in Canada. The full report identifies challenges faced by Indigenous people in accessing dementia care services and supports that are responsive to their needs, highlights key elements of a culturally safe framework for dementia care in Indigenous communities, and provides examples of innovative dementia care services for Indigenous populations. While little is known about dementias among Indigenous populations in Canada, they are recognized as an emerging health issue due to the rapid aging and greater prevalence of risk factors amongst this population.
