Webinar: Management of COVID-19 and the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

Overview

This pre-recorded webinar is hosted by the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health (NCCIH).

There are two presentations as part of this webinar. The first, by Dr. Yoav Keynan of the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCCID), provides an update on the global situation and management of COVID-19 as of April 27, 2020 including healthcare capacity, disease modelling, diagnosis, and the exploration of treatment options. The second presentation by Dr. Tom Wong, Chief Medical Officer of Public Health and the Chief Science Officer at the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), hones in on the appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during COVID-19. With a particular focus on Indigenous communities, Dr. Wong speaks to the span of PPE from facemasks and gloves to public health messaging around social distancing.

Speakers

Dr. Yoav Keynan M.D, PhD, Associate Professor at Departments of Internal Medicine, Medical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases and Community Health Sciences, University of Manitoba and Ad Honorem Professor at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellin, Colombia. He is a clinician-scientist, Infectious diseases specialist and member of the Manitoba HIV Program. He subsequently completed a residency in Internal Medicine and training in Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba and Ph.D in Medical Microbiology. He is the Scientific Director of the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases at the University of Manitoba focusing on infectious diseases knowledge translation for vulnerable populations. Dr. Keynan has published over 125 peer reviewed manuscripts, with international and local clinical research of respiratory infections. His laboratory research focuses on immune and genetic determinants of immune activation and the role they play in HIV acquisition, progression and HIV associated coinfections. He is leading point of care and serological assay validation and clinical trials for treatment of COVID-19.

Dr. Thomas Wong, MD, MPH, CCFP, FRCPC is the Director General for the Office of Population and Public Health. He is also the Chief Medical Officer of Public Health and the Chief Science Officer at the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch of Indigenous Services Canada. He is trained in family medicine, internal medicine, infectious diseases and public health at McGill, Harvard and Columbia. His public health work includes engagement with Indigenous Communities, HIV, hepatitis C, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, influenza, vaccine preventable diseases, antimicrobial resistance, chronic diseases, mental health, addiction and health disparities. Dr. Wong sits on multiple national and international committees and has academic appointments at both the University of Ottawa and the University of Toronto.
