Hantavirus is a rare and potentially deadly family of viruses, spread mainly by wild rodents such as mice and rats. This fact sheet discusses basic information about Hantavirus illnesses in humans, including what it is, how it spreads, its prevalence in Canada, signs and symptoms of Hantavirus infection, and potential health outcomes of the disease. The fact sheet also presents information on what people can do to protect themselves from Hantavirus illnesses, such as by avoiding or minimizing contact with wild rodents and their waste and disinfecting affected areas.
