Landscapes of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis health: An environmental scan of organizations, literature and research, 4th edition

May 2025

Landscapes of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis health: An environmental scan of organizations, literature and research, 4th edition is the fourth iteration of a report first produced in 2006, then in 2010, and again in 2012. The report aims to map the current landscape of literature and research on First Nations, Inuit, and Métis health and assess whether these align with the health priorities of national Indigenous organizations working in public health. The report begins by describing the national Indigenous organizations working in First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis health and identifying their current health priorities. It then reviews peer- and non-peer reviewed literature related to First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis health published between January 2013 and December 2020, identifying primary and secondary topics and the populations of focus. This is followed by a review of research funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) between January 2017 and December 2020, with a similar analysis of primary and secondary topics and the populations of focus, as well as institute affiliation, type of award, and funding priorities organized by theme. A brief overview is provided of federal government organizations also engaged in research related to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis health. The paper concludes by summarizing some key observations arising from this updated review, including a discussion on the trends and gaps identified in the literature and the CIHR-funded research.
