Birchbark Collaborative

Digital storytelling guide

December 2025

From May to July 2025, the NCCIH, in partnership with Birchbark Collaborative, undertook a national digital storytelling and workshop project, Stories of our health: Perspectives of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth. With funding from the TD Bank Group, this project explored the concept of health and well-being, through stories shared by young Indigenous people from across Canada.

This guidebook presents the methods, resources, and tools employed by the storytelling project. It is intended for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, communities and organizations to assist them in creating their own meaningful digital storytelling projects with Indigenous youth. The guidebook takes readers through each step of the process: from the beginning with outreach to partner organizations and recruitment of a facilitator, technology lead, and youth participants; to the middle – with information on the resources and technology needed to host a digital storytelling workshop, as well as logistics and budget considerations; to the end – with a day-by-day facilitation guide for workshop activities. This guidebook serves as a starting point and can be adapted to suit community-based needs of organizers and local youth.
