Making a difference
In 2016, Dr. Sarah de Leeuw wrote a series of monthly cover stories for Canadian Family Physician (CFP). These stories feature anecdotes and real world examples of initiatives being undertaken by physicians across Canada who are making a difference in how health care services and programs are delivered. Topics discussed include rethinking how access to health services can be improved in rural and remote regions, such as telehealth (January) and rural maternity care (July); changing the ways in which health care services are provided to patients, including patient-centred care (March), residential hospice care for palliative patients (August), and interprofessional partnerships in health (October); considering the determinants of health in health care, including poverty (April), climate change (May), and social justice (December); changing how health evidence is gathered and used so that is more relevant to local context (February, September); and delivering innovative health care, including an example of a model which promotes men’s mental health holistically, in the streets and out of doctors’ offices (June) and one using creative expression for well-being and social intervention (November).
Each of these stories touches on topics either directly or indirectly relevant to Indigenous populations, and each highlights the diverse roles health practitioners can play in promoting health and well-being for marginalized populations, from advocacy and activism, to personal reflection on how the relationship between health care providers and patients can be changed.
