Description

This article summarizes findings from a mixed-methods study assessing differences in perceptions of cultural competence present among senior nursing students before and after a cultural immersion experience. The study revealed that while students generally perceived themselves as culturally competent, their journals revealed many negative stereotypes and misperceptions regarding the concept of cultural competency, highlighting the need to teach students the importance of adopting an ethic of cultural humility, which stresses attentive listening, openness to other cultures, self-reflection and self-critique in one's interactions with others.
