Environmental and Socio-Cultural Impacts of Glyphosate-Based Herbicides: Insights from Indigenous Knowledge and Western Science

2023

Patterson, H.

Guelph University

Description

Drawing on insights from the "Connecting guardians in a changing world" workshop, the author explores the perspectives of members of First Nations across the Robinson-Huron Treaty area about the use of herbicide in commercial forestry. She then presents results from a spectral analysis comparing commercial forestry sites that were clear-cut with those that were clear-cut and treated with glyphosate-based herbicides, assessing the impacts on spring green-up phenology. The research highlights how weaving together Indigenous and western knowledge systems can help address shared environmental concerns in holistic ways that emphasize the interconnectedness of the environment.
