In Plain Sight: Addressing Indigenous-Specific Racism and Discrimination in BC Health Care

2020

Engage BC

Description

Responding to allegations about racism among staff at a Vancouver Island hospital, in June 2020 the provincial government launched an independent review of BC’s health care system after allegations were made about an organized “Price is Right” game involving hospital staff guessing Indigenous patients’ blood alcohol levels. This report, written by Justice Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafond, presents findings from the independent review and represents the voices of nearly 9000 Indigenous patients, family members, third-party witnesses, and healthcare workers about experiences of interpersonal and systemic racism and its impacts. It makes 24 recommendations that represent a blueprint for fundamental changes needed.
