In this article, the authors model information from records of sanatoria admissions and discharges for First Nations patients occurring between 1933 and 1959 in Saskatchewan to explore the relationship between admission length and year of admission (used as a proxy for improvements in TB treatment). They aimed to assess whether the discovery of antibiotics shortened the length of hospital admission. Counterintuitively, the study found increases in the length of first admissions. It also found that while the number of patients completing their treatment regimen increased, more patients had left the hospital against medical advice, leading to an increased readmission rate.
