The author argues that focusing on the measurement of language acquisition and academic achievement in gauging the success of Indigenous language immersion education tells only part of the story. Developing high personal self-esteem is another key metric. She describes the impact of an Indigenous language immersion program on the personal and collective self-esteem of kindergarteners, and discusses the concept of ethno-cultural identity as important for student success in different cultural, geographic and educational contexts.
