Why Cultural Safety Rather than Cultural Competency is Required to Achieve Health Equity: A Literature Review and Recommended Definition

2019

Curtis, E., Jones, R., Tipene-Leach, D., Walker, C., Loring, B., Paine, S.J., & Papaarangi, R.

International Journal for Equity in Health

Description

The authors undertake a literature review of international articles on definitions of cultural competency and cultural safety. The review indicated that healthcare practitioners, healthcare organizations and health systems need to be engaged in working towards cultural safety, which requires they be prepared to critique the 'taken for granted' power structures and challenge their own culture and cultural systems rather than placing priority on becoming competent in the cultures of others.
