Why are we settling? Indigenous cultural safety education for counsellors in Ontario

2020

Moucessian, A.M.

Description

The author presents findings from research examining cultural safety education for counselling psychology students in Ontario universities to determine the extent to which this education is available, the content of this education, and its potential impact on the ability of students to develop culturally safe practice. The study found that Indigenous cultural safety education is only partially being incorporated as core content in curriculum, and that instructors took a fragmented approach to teaching about Indigenous wellness, leading to a fragmented understanding among students about how to develop culturally safe practice.
