Description

This article summarizes findings from a review of literature that conceptualizes terminology related to culturally appropriate care in the context of maternal and child health programs. The review demonstrated that theoretical definitions of cultural safety are distinct from cultural competence, but there is a lack of strict delineations. By comparing the conceptual basis of culturally appropriate care with their application, the authors note gaps in the current provision of culturally appropriate healthcare for Indigenous Peoples and make recommendations for improving quality of care.
