The incidence of obesity and chronic diseases is much higher among Indigenous Peoples compared to the general population. Improving Indigenous Peoples’ physical activity can contribute to improved physical and mental health outcomes and overall wellness.
Adapted from the National Collaborating Centre for Indigenous Health’s Indigenous sports and recreation programs and partnerships across Canada: A Literature review and environmental scan, this fact sheet offers information on Indigenous Peoples’ health and physical activity, with a focus on sports and physical recreation, including traditional activities. The fact sheet provides an overview of barriers and facilitators to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples’ participation in sports and recreation. It also outlines best practices for improving policy making, research, and programs, and makes recommendations for further research.
