Indigenous peoples have had a fractious relationship with Canada’s healthcare system due to a longstanding lack of consideration for the historical and contemporary realities of Indigenous peoples’ lives, resulting in feelings of discrimination, racism, mistrust and powerlessness in healthcare encounters. In this Healthcare Management Forum journal article, Greenwood argues for the need to transform mainstream healthcare and ensure cultural safety throughout health services. She discusses a conceptual model for change at the structural, system and service delivery levels, drawing from examples of transformation already occurring within BC’s northernmost health authority – Northern Health. Due to the complexity of factors that underlie health inequities for Indigenous peoples, she argues that policy actions must be taken across diverse sectors and disciplines at these three levels of change.
