Video – Chapter 18 – Knowing Who You Are – Family History and Aboriginal Determinants of Health, with Brenda Macdougall

December 2016

In this video, Brenda Macdougall, Chair of Métis research at the University of Ottawa, emphasizes the importance of sharing narratives about the power of kinship relationships for repairing the circle of family and restoring Métis identity, which is critical in the rebuilding of healthy citizens and healthy nations. The values of reciprocity, mutual support, generosity, decency, and order, which are crucial to successful family relationships, also influence individual and community behaviours and actions, helping to promote health and well-being at a broader collective level. This video relates to chapter 18 of the textbook Determinants of Indigenous Peoples’ Health in Canada: Beyond the Social.

The NCCIH has developed Beyond the Social: Author Interviews, a series of eleven videos featuring interviews with some of the authors and editors of Determinants of Indigenous Peoples’ Health in Canada: Beyond the Social. The videos offer real-world insight and perspective that illuminate key concepts in the book, but they can also be used as stand-alone learning tools for anyone teaching or promoting Indigenous health and well-being.
