Aboriginal Custom Adoption Recognition Act

1994

Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories

Description

Inuit recognize custom adoption as an essential practice. In custom adoptions, birth parents give consent to other family members, extended family, close friends, or community members to adopt their child and they generally maintain a role in the child’s life after adoption. This legislation allows custom adoptions to be easily recognized through a relatively simple application process.
