This article discusses the socio-economic determinants that contributed to the disproportionate impacts of COVID-19 experienced by Indigenous populations in Canada. These include decreased access to social and cultural support, unsuitable housing conditions, water insecurity, food insecurity, low income, disrupted family dynamics, and increased substance use. The authors argue for the need to adopt an Indigenous framework for addressing disparities in the social determinants of health, one that is implemented in collaboration with communities, integrates a health equity approach, fosters cultural safety, utilizes cross-jurisdictional approaches, is informed by political competence, and is grounded in community and culture.
