Cultural Competence and Cultural Humility: A Critical Reflection of Key Cultural Diversity Concepts

2016

Danso, R.

Journal of Social Work

Description

The wide ranging defintions and conceptualizations of cultural competence has led many to question its relevancy for addressing structural problems. This paper critiques cultural competence and cultural humility from a social work perspective, arguing that in this context, the fundamental ideas of cultural humility are foundational principles of anti-oppressive social work practice and education rather than being a new construct. As such, instead of abandoning cultural competence, it should be adapted so that it is more relevant in working with diversity and difference.
