Cultural safety and engagement: Keys to improving access to care

2017

Ringer, J.

Description

The author argues that engaging with individuals and communities who benefit from services in determining the types and forms of services is an essential component of enhancing access to care for Indigenous Peoples of Canada. Using the example of the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB), the author identifies challenges faced in providing access to high-quality care to the Cree communities of northern Quebec, explores the concept of cultural safety and its importance in helping the CBHSSJB engage individuals and communities in ways to improve access, and highlights the concept's relevance for policy-makers, funders, and providers in other jurisdictions.
