Persistant organic pollutants (POPs) have been reported to influence immunological activity. Native American communities are at increased risk of developing an autoimmune disease because they are disproportionately exposed to harmful toxins in the environment. In this article, the authors present findings from a study that aimed to determine the association between POPs and levels of thyroid peroxidase antibodies in serum obtained from Native American women to measure their risk of autoimmune thyroid disease.
