This living document is intended to support social workers in Alberta in their work with Indigenous children, youth, families, communities, and Nations. It provides "first step" guidelines to assist them in building and maintaining good relationships that are based on the Seven Teachings and found in most Indigenous belief systems. Key themes discussed include: spirituality, ceremony and culture; relationships; colonial impacts; racism and lateral violence; ethical space; identity, lived experience and knowing; establishing safe relational space; building relationships; protocol and policy; cultural responsibilities and relationship accountability; ways of knowing; and becoming an ally.
