Description

The authors undertook a study investigating the administration of the extent of polypharmacy - that is, the taking of more medications than clinically required or appropriate - among First Nations in BC. They found that many First Nations patients did not know the names of their medications, the reasons for taking them, or how to advocate for themselves during healthcare interactions. The authors discuss the importance of a unique strategy, rooted in cultural safety, for empowering First Nations and Indigenous people to discuss their medications with health professionals and support those professionals in better understanding how to engage First Nations patients about their medications.
