The COVID-19 Pandemic: Invoking the famine and pestilence clause to be paired with the medicine chest clause from the numbered treaties

2021

Bourassa, C., Starblanket, D., Langan, J., Hagel, M., Anderson, M., & Chapados, M.

International Indigenous Policy Journal

Description

The authors argue that a treaty-based approach is needed to address the COVID-19 pandemic in Indigenous communities. They invoke two clauses embedded in Treaty 6 that legally obligate the federal government to commit to ensuring sufficient financial resources and supports are directed to First Nations communities in their pandemic response.
