In this article, the author describes how colonialism is the primary distal determinant of ill health among Indigenous Peoples and how contemporary health care is an extension of colonialism that contributes to ongoing assimilation and erosion of Indigenous cultural identities. The author discusses two principles from cultural safety literature and practical options for action that can help end cultural erosion.
