This article aims to address a knowledge gap on contaminant exposure from oil production activities and associated impacts for species at risk by conducting a review of the literature on contaminants in wood bison in the Peace-Athabasca region. The authors find evidence of contaminants and heavy metals in this species and compared the types and levels of heavy metals in wood bison to moose. The authors conclude by discussing the gaps in knowledge on select heavy metals in wood bison and the known effects on human health.
