Despite expectations that the COVID-19 pandemic would have disproportionate impacts on Indigenous populations in Canada, data from the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority indicates that First Nations communities in the Nishnawbe Aski region of northern Ontario were able to limit COVID-19 infection and had a lower overall fatality rate than the general Canadian population. This article explores community responses to COVID-19 in this region to illustrate the steps taken to mitigate the spread of infection and serious illness and highlight the importance of rapid and strength-based responses.
