This paper discusses why Indigenous community engagement is important in science-based activities and research in environmental health issues, some of the barriers that prevent community engagement, and efforts by the Environmental Health Research Division of the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch, Health Canada, to carry out community-based participatory research with Indigenous Peoples.
