Chapter 11 of the NCCIH’s Indigenous cultural safety: An environmental scan of cultural safety initiatives in Canada presents cultural safety initiatives and resources developed and implemented in Newfoundland and Labrador. This includes those undertaken by the provincial government and its various departments and agencies, regional health authorities, professional organizations, Indigenous organizations, and other organizations with a health mandate operating in the province.
Among the cultural safety initiatives identified in Newfoundland and Labrador are the bilateral relationship building efforts between the federal or provincial government and Indigenous groups; tripartite joint decision making mechanisms; efforts to build a culturally competent workforce; principles of cultural safety embedded in strategies and action plans to address specific health issues and advance reconciliation; a 10-year plan to transform the health system; and programs and services to better address the needs of Indigenous clients. Many organizations with a health mandate have also developed educational resources and training initiatives aimed at enhancing cultural safety in health and social services across the province.
