Indigenous cultural safety - An environmental scan of cultural safety initiatives in Canada - Chapter 15 - Cultural safety initiatives in Nunavut

June 2025

Cultural safety initiatives look different in Nunavut compared to the rest of Canada because the territorial government has a mission to enhance health and well-being for its residents by incorporating traditional Inuit knowledge and values at all levels of service delivery and design, and because of ongoing challenges in maintaining adequate health human resources. Chapter 15 of the NCCIH’s Indigenous cultural safety: An environmental scan of cultural safety initiatives in Canada presents cultural safety initiatives developed and implemented in Nunavut in this unique context. Much of these initiatives focus on developing Inuit capacity to fill health human resource gaps, developing and implementing system-wide approaches to support health and healing, and adapting policies and practices to reflect Nunavut and Inuit societal values.

This chapter reveals how most of the cultural safety activities in Nunavut have been developed and implemented by the Government of Nunavut and its various departments and agencies, either alone or in partnership with external organizations. Few initiatives have been developed and implemented by other organizations with a health mandate.
