Chapter 12 of the NCCIH’s Indigenous cultural safety: An environmental scan of cultural safety initiatives in Canada presents cultural safety initiatives and resources developed and implemented in Prince Edward Island. This includes initiatives undertaken by the provincial government and its various departments and agencies, Health PEI and other health system institutions, professional organizations, Indigenous organizations, and other organizations with a health mandate operating in the province.
Prince Edward Island has had a long history of working collaboratively with First Nations to identify and pursue priorities related to health, resulting in the creation of mechanisms for incorporating First Nations perspectives into provincial policy and program development. Other provincial initiatives that promote cultural safety and humility in health and social services systems include programs and services that better meet the needs of Indigenous clients, including those offered by Indigenous organizations, and training initiatives to build a culturally competent workforce. However, this chapter identifies few cultural safety initiatives undertaken by professional organizations or other organizations with a health mandate.
